Ingredients

  • 1 packet pizza dough store-bought or homemade, softened
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 6 pitted black olives sliced, for eyes
  • 1 tbsp olive oil for brushing
  • to taste salt optional, for dough

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Rolling pin
  • Parchment paper
  • Knife

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lightly flour the surface and roll out the dough into a large, thin rectangle, about 12x8 inches. This provides a smooth, even base for shaping the mummy.
  2. Using your hands or a knife, cut strips of dough about 1 inch wide and 4 inches long. These strips will form the bandages of your mummy. Gather all the strips before proceeding.
  3. Place the dough rectangle onto the prepared baking sheet. Arrange the first strip horizontally near the top of the rectangle, then layer subsequent strips slightly overlapping, to create a bandage wrapping effect across the entire base. Leave a space at the top for the face area.
  4. Cross and crisscross the strips in a playful, uneven fashion, gently pressing each into the dough to secure the shape. Cover most of the surface, leaving the top section clear for the face and eyes.
  5. Bake the shaped dough in the oven until it's golden brown and cooked through, about 12-15 minutes. The crust should be crisp and slightly puffed at the edges. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
  6. Brush the top lightly with olive oil to give it a shiny, finished look. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the surface, covering the entire mummy except for the face area.
  7. Cut two small slices from black olives to create eyes. Place each olive slice on the face area, spacing them evenly apart to give the mummy a playful, spooky expression.
  8. Return the pizza to the oven for another 3-5 minutes, until the cheese melts and bubbles slightly. Keep an eye on it to prevent burning.
  9. Remove the mummy pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Slice into sections or serve whole as a fun, spooky centerpiece for your holiday table.

Notes

For extra spookiness, add more olives or use different colored ingredients for the eyes. You can also customize the bandage pattern for a more chaotic look.
