Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
Using your hands, shape the mixture into small, evenly-sized meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 15–20 minutes, until they are browned on the outside and cooked through. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Remove the meatballs from the oven once they are golden and transfer them to the skillet with heated olive oil. Sear each meatball for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally, so they develop a slight crispy exterior.
Next, spoon tomato sauce over the meatballs and simmer for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
While the meatballs are simmering, grate the mozzarella cheese. Once cooked, transfer the meatballs to a serving platter and start shaping the mozzarella into thin strips or small squares.
Wrap each meatball with mozzarella strips, leaving some edges sticking out to resemble bandages. Gently press the cheese onto the meatball to help it adhere.
Place the assembled mummy meatballs back on the baking sheet and bake for an additional 5 minutes, until the cheese melts and begins to brown slightly.
Remove the mummy meatballs from the oven and let them cool slightly. Use small dollops of additional melted mozzarella or olive bits for eyes, adding a spooky touch.
Arrange the spooky mummies on a serving platter and serve warm, allowing the crispy cheese bandages to be a fun, chewy contrast to the savory meatball inside.
